Certificate of Insurance Request

Generate a clean, complete email asking a subcontractor (or their broker) for a current COI that names you as additional insured.

Fill in the details

Subject: COI request — additional insured for [project]

Hi [Their Company] team,

Before your crew starts on [project], we need a current
Certificate of Insurance (COI) on file. Please have your broker issue a COI that:

  • Names [Your Company] as an additional insured
  • Shows at least: [required coverage limits]
  • Lists the project: [project]
  • Includes a waiver of subrogation in our favor (if your policy allows)

Please send it by [date] so we can keep the schedule.
If it's easiest, your broker can email it straight to [your email].

Thanks,
[Your Name]
[Your Company]
[your email]

  Coverage requested: [required coverage limits]
Why it matters

Confirm coverage before the crew starts

A Certificate of Insurance proves a subcontractor carries active coverage and lists you as additional insured. New to COIs? Read the contractor's guide to COIs, then put it in writing with the subcontractor agreement.

Common questions

What should a COI request include?

Ask for a current Certificate of Insurance that names you as additional insured, shows the coverage types and limits you require (typically general liability, auto, and workers' comp), references the specific project, and — if the policy allows — includes a waiver of subrogation in your favor.

What does 'additional insured' mean on a COI?

Adding you as additional insured extends the subcontractor's liability coverage to claims arising out of their work for you. It's one of the main reasons to collect a COI before a crew starts, rather than relying on their word that they're covered.

When should I collect a subcontractor's COI?

Before they set foot on the job — and keep it current for the duration of the work. Chasing insurance paperwork after a crew is already booked (or after an incident) is exactly the situation a COI request avoids.
